Home security has come a long way over the years. At one point, you needed a moat. Then of course you’d have alligators to care for. Plus trebuchet maintenance. It was a whole thing.
Then like a thousand years later we started having those central alarm systems with a keypad on the wall and those little signs that go in the window. Those would get really tiresome somewhere around the fifth time that you set those suckers off by accident and then frantically mashed the code incorrectly over and over while imagining the SWAT team that was probably headed your way while you did. At least alligators will eat your table scraps.
Fortunately today there are just way, way better solutions. Smart doorbells and small wireless cameras let you piece together a virtual perimeter that can pretty much put digital eyes and ears wherever you need them. This stuff has gotten pretty inexpensive and easy to set up. You don’t need wires running through your walls or a professional monitoring service.
The only downside is that for like $200 you can accidentally put so many cameras around your house that you start to look like you’ve gone a bit mad. Well it turns out that you can avoid cameras in some of those spots with simple motion detectors like these that are both inconspicuous and, you know…don’t watch for YOU all the time, along with intruders. Needless to say, a lot of those cameras are part of Google or Amazon ecosystems that you might prefer not be looking at you while you nap on the couch.
