Good enough
“Business casual,” they say.
It’s the great compromise that a shadowy cabal of Human Resources managers came up with when it became clear that most office workers had no desire to play dress-up five days a week pretending that coats and ties make any sense for a bunch of career spreadsheeters and emailers.
But still, as with any great societal shift, you have to replace the thing with something else. You can’t just get rid of neckties and let people wear whatever. That’s a recipe for anarchy. Or at least sweatpants at work.
Either way, it’s not good.
Hence the polo shirt.
The humble polo was once the exclusive domain of athletes playing horsey sports and overgrown man-children loudly announcing that their dad’s a lawyer. But today it’s a way to say “Hey, I know that a t-shirt would be inappropriate right now and I’m willing to spend the absolute minimum amount of effort to wear something more than that.”
Thus polos became the go-to uniform of today’s man, a garment equally at home at a cubicle desk or in an awkward outdoor family portrait.
And while it’s objectively nice to be able to use such a user-friendly yet unremarkable piece of clothing to meet so many fashion needs, it is very easy to accidentally wear the same red one twice and then have everyone call you Jake from State Farm for the rest of your life.
