I couldn’t help but laugh as I tumbled in the surf. The wave took out my legs and sent me splashing into the crystal blue waters. I had been trying to impress my husband with my prowess on a surfboard, but ended up rolling in with the tide. I did my best to regain my dignity, but it was of little use sitting in the surf with my hair a wild mess and sand in my bathing suit. I could see his wide smile as he chuckled from his beach towel.

He stood and walked to help me up. When I finally got to my feet, he pulled me close and planted a kiss on my forehead. We were now both laughing and tears of laughter mixed with the salty brine of the ocean. It was a perfect day on the sun-drenched beach. Children splashed and played along the shore. The very air was alive with the fragrances of paradise; palm trees, tropical flowers, coconut, and the very sand under our feet. Again, it was a perfect day…

We still travel to the beach. We’re a little older and slower and though I still catch a wave or two, I’m past trying to impress my husband doing so. We walk along the shore and reminisce on those wondrous days, each one added to the foundation of our life together. And when the warm wind blows from the south, those familiar scents dance in on the breeze and we both chuckle…back to that moment in the surf.
